Thinking Practices is the Critical Studies programme
that runs throughout Stage 1 of the Fine Art course.
It comprises two consecutive Modules: FAP 110 and FAP 111

During the Thinking Practices modules all students:
* attend a regular lecture programme
* are given seminars to help develop critical writing, research and presentation skills
* are given opportunities for discussions and debate
* are set two assessed writing and presentation tasks:

A crititique of an exhibition (+ digital presentation)
(1500-2000 words - for submission after Christmas) FAP 110
To assist in gathering material for this critique a trip to London is scheduled during early November, focussing on Tate Modern.
The digital presentation comprises around 6 slides illustrating the student's critique with a small amount of contextualising writing, using Powerpoint or similar - submitted on CD.

A self-directed essay or an extended crititique of an exhibition (+ presentation)
(2000 words - for submission after Easter) FAP 111
After students have completed this second task they are asked to make a short, assessed presentation of some aspect of their research for their writing.

For each module students compile a research folder which comprises lecture notes (their own); research for their critical writing and any other relevant material.

The teaching material on these webpages
(see links on left) is currently under development with the aim of assisting students in their Thinking Practices work. Information can also be found on the University of Plymouth's Student Portal.
