Talk
by Steven Eastwood
Wednesday 18th Jan 2012
4pm Roland Lewinsky Building: Lecture Theatre 2
Plymouth University
Steven Eastwood is a filmmaker and artist who works with fiction
and documentary. He recently completed his first feature, Buried
Land (in collaboration with Alan Rhodes), official selection:
Tribeca, Moscow, Sarajevo, Mumbai Film Festival 2010.
Eastwood's work appropriates narrative and documentary conventions,
dragging the appearances of the cinema's habits into unusual
contexts. Story burns in the gate, subjects become caught-up
in the interval of the edit, representation is made complicated.
The content of his films, although elliptical, often deals with
the collective will of a people to construct new paradigms of
behaviour, and with narratives of faith and of truth.
Steven is currently Co-Programme Leader in Film & Video
at the University of East London. He has published numerous
book chapters, conference papers and articles and gained a theory-practice
PhD through UCL, The Slade in 2007 for the research project
Cinema into the Real. He co-founded the arts laboratory event
OMSK and the Volcano! Film Festival in the 1990s. He formed
the production company Paradogs in 1997 and his documentary
Those Who Are Jesus (2001) was nominated for a Grierson Award
at BAFTA. |

Adam
Garratt: EXHIBITION 1,1
Tue 16th Aug. - Sun 11th Sept., Exeter Phoenix cafe bar, Exeter, Devon
Sewn together, the cut paper collages in Exhibition 1,1 describe aspects
of architecture. In red, black, white, gold & shades of grey these
bold images are set in reclaimed gold frames which encourage a sense
of nostalgia. At close quarters the interactions between the materials
used & lines in the work are revealed.
In this second solo exhibition by Adam Garratt, a brand new series
of work has been composed and is part of a growing collection that
comment on the skylines of cities across the country. On mass, they
are a directory of what may be considered mundane square buildings
owned by councils, telecoms companies, factories or educational establishments.
Built in Glass, Metal & Concrete. Re-created in paper.
Private View: Wednesday 17th August 6.30pm

ATRIA
- TALK AND PREVIEW OF ARTWORK: Tuesday 15th March at 17.30,
Plymouth Lecture Theatre, Portland Square Building, University
of Plymouth (click graphic for poster)
This project stems from research into the function of the developing
heart of marine larvae by biologists at the University of Plymouth
using high-resolution bio-imaging techniques. Deborah
Robinson (artist in residence with the Marine Biology and
ecology research group) together with artist David
Strang have re-traced the pathways of heart development
by transposing data from the scientist’s original experiments
into sound and image. This sound will be projected into the
three atria of the Portland Square Building via the network
of 56 speakers that they contain. The installation also includes
projected imagery.
This event brings together the scientists, technologists and
artists involved who will explain how their collaboration has
led to ATRIA. |

Big
Arts Student Opportunity
On Saturday 21st May Lord Mayor's Day hits Plymouth City Centre. It's
a massive celebration of Plymouth, with community stages, a huge young
people's carnival parade and...well, that's where you come in. This
year we (Barefoot – Plymouth Arts Education Agency) want to
add some cutting edge, mind boggling, home grown street entertainment
to the mix. We'd like arts students (art, drama, dance, music, media
etc.) to take the lead and come up with art 'happenings', performance
of all sorts, or anything else in between that you can cook up to
amaze the public.
* We'll provide a number of 'pitches' across the city centre and a
mid morning to 1.00pm timetable so you can do your thing once, twice
or three times in outdoor locations. We'll also help with advice,
contacts and 'dealing with officialdom'.
* You'll provide personnel, a great original idea and about 10-20
minutes of well-rehearsed attention-grabbing 'stuff' loosely based
on the theme of 'Discovery'. It needs to be repeatable, interactive
and suitable for a family audience.
To get involved contact Cath Hough at Barefoot at or on 01752

Project
Space 11 are hosting four week long residencies in our space
in Plymouth City Market. These will be running from 28th of February
– 26th March. We would like to invite third year BA Fine Art
students, MA Fine Art students and recent graduates of the BA and
MA Fine Art courses to submit proposals for a week long residency,
from Monday 28th February to Saturday 5th March. The deadline for
submitting proposals is Wednesday 16th of February.
The residency brief:
Four artists from a range of emerging to established levels of practice,
each with a connection or an existing relationship/dialogue with the
city will be resident in PS11. This connection with the city can be
familial or creative - from an artist who has roots in Plymouth to
an individual who has a track record of delivering projects in the
region.
Each artist will spend one week in the space - 10am – 4pm Monday
– Saturday – with the simple brief that the work they
make should respond to the location – such as the community/physical
space/artist-led culture/history of market. Their practice will be
under the scrutiny of the general public and dialogue and collaboration
with audiences will be encouraged.
At the end of the 4 weeks, there will be a panel discussion about
the artists' experiences, the significance of a 'residency' in the
public eye and what it means to have a relationship with a place.
We can offer a £100 budget (production and fee), in kind support
from the three of us (including marketing), and use of equipment from
our partners (Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth Arts Centre).
Students/graduates please contact us at e-leven@live.co.uk
Many thanks, Beth, Bryony and Scott - Project Space 11 [cid:3379760296_121831399] |
